Hostelling International Baltimore Maryland

Explore the Hostel

HI-Baltimore Hostel is situated in an historic 18th century mansion.  It was originally built in 1857 for a wealthy merchant named Francis W. Bennett.  Francis lived in the mansion along with his wife until his death in 1880.  Over the years the building has been used for various purposes, including individual residences and a fraternity house.  The building was purchased in 1983 by the Potomac Area Council of Hostelling International USA.

From 1984 until 1999 the HI-Baltimore Hostel operated out of the building.  It closed in 1999.  During its seven year hiatus the building went through a few years of neglect and was almost sold.  However, a dedicated group of volunteers from the Friends of the Baltimore Hostel group and members of the board of the Potomac Area Council stepped in to lovingly restore the hostel and make our July 1st (re)opening  a reality.
